Mafra City was created in 1917. It is influenced by the immigration of Germans, Poles, Ukrainians, Bukovinos and Italians during the 19th century. The region of Mafra is rich in forest reserves, mainly Araucaria pine, yerba mate (erva-mate) and other species, which came to represent for many years its main activity, forest extraction, which allowed the settlement of the first settlers, who would later develop subsistence farming activities. Mafra has a population of 55,000 inhabitants, and together with its sister City Rio Negro (33,000 inhabitants), it forms a hub for trade, services, agriculture and the manufacturing industry (wood) for the region. Being located at an average altitude of 800m, it has an average annual temperature of 19 °C, with a maximum of 31 °C in January and a minimum of -3 °C in July. Relative air humidity ranges from 80 to 84%. In early December the temperature is around 15 °C during the night and 28°C during the day.
